The United States Constitution and Bill of Rights provides the framework for the protection of our most basic and sacred rights, including the rights of free speech, free assembly, the right to be free in our homes from unreasonable searches and seizures, the right to be free from police excessive force, and, if incarcerated, the right to be free from neglect, physical and sexual abuse.

A particular federal law, 42 U.S.C. Section 1983, allows for the filing of a complaint against those local governmental agencies and officials responsible for violating an individual's constitutional rights.
